The Outer
London fund is part of a major package of investment which aims
to boost local high streets, deliver growth, new jobs and improve
lives. This package is made up of the Mayors £70m Regeneration
Fund and £50m from the Mayors Outer London Fund, plus
additional match funding from local boroughs.
The Green Lanes
Round 2 bid was submitted by the Green Lanes Strategy Group
and was accompanied by a beautiful scaled model of the high street.
The Harringay project was also singled out for particular mention
by Boris Johnson when he announced the bid.
The £1.77m will be augmented to almost £2.1m with matched
funding coming from local traders. The project focuses on three
key elements:
1. Create a new gateway for Harringay - a total revamp of the bridge
with 3D fields of lights and LED panels to inform and to showcase
local artists & messages.
2. Improve the public realm at street level - this will focus on
a 'micro square' approach - improving all the junctions that lead
on to Green Lanes with better trees, building up the side road headers
to pavement level and adding benches. Power points will also be
added to allow the development of a street market culture.
3. Improving shop fronts - a limited number of shop fronts will
be replaced with quality hard wood ones, echoing a more traditional
feel. Initial funding will limit the number to about 35 fronts and
individual traders will add 20% of the cost themselves.

This is brilliant news! The Green Lanes Strategy Group
has been pressing for these improvements for many years and as Chair
of the group I am really delighted. This is a testament to 10 years
of partnership working with the council, traders, community groups,
residents, local councillors and the police. Together we have helped
transform the image of Green Lanes and now we can transform the
infrastructure too. With this help from the Outer London Fund I
cant wait to see a new, improved street scene for local people
and visitors to the borough.
Councillor Nilgun Canver - Cabinet Member for the Environment
and Chair of the Green Lanes Strategy Group
"As members of the Green Lanes Strategy Group (GLSG), the
Gardens Residents Association is extremely proud and excited about
the success of our bid to the OLF Round 2. Together with the other
two residents associations, the local traders association and our
local councillors, we have tirelessly worked in partnership for
10 years to improve Harringay Green Lanes, London N4. It is a great
day for our local community, we now have some serious funding to
help with regenerating this historic part of Green Lanes."
Francois Ballay - Chair of the Gardens Residents Association
(GRA)
"This is wonderful news for Green Lanes and all the traders
and residents who have been working so hard to improve the area.
The LCSP (Ladder Community Safety Partnership) and all of its members
are absolutely delighted that the much anticipated regeneration
of Green Lanes will now definitely be going ahead. We are hugely
grateful to the Outer London Fund and the Mayor's team both for
their financial support and for sharing our vision of a regenerated
high street in Green Lanes."
Ian Sygrave - Chair of the Ladder Community Safety Partnership
(LCSP)
"We are completely overwhelmed by this fortuitous news
and decision and it will mean a great deal to the Green Lanes community.
We have been lucky to win in Round 1 which delivered a wonderful
Food Festival and Christmas lights, but we are incredibly grateful
to win again in Round 2. This will give us a huge opportunity to
transform and improve the high street. It is the single biggest
investment the area has seen in 3 decades, and we like to thank
the Mayor of London and the Design for London's team who had the
hardest job to choose from so many great bids received from all
the London boroughs. We will do our utmost to deliver our bid on
time and on budget. 2012 will be a magnificent year for Londoners,
and Green Lanes high street has been truly inspired!"
